The mandated changes for the EPA 2010 are targeting clearner burning engines to reduce smog and improve ground level ozones. Daimler Trucks North America will be utilizing Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology to reduce levels of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) being omitted from the engine. SCR technology will use an additional aftertreament device to treat NOx levels after the combustion process rather than within the cylinder with EGR. This means current or reduced EGR rates which in turn equates to better fuel economy, lower operating temperatures and fewer aftertreatment regenerations.
